Exercise 1: Feel Your Transversus Abdominis During a Long Tone

  1. Place your hands on the sides of your lower abdomen, slightly below your navel.
  2. Inhale calmly, allowing your lower ribs and abdominal area to open, without raising your shoulders.
  3. Exhale for six to eight seconds on a steady "sss."
  4. Observe the slight tightening that gradually appears around your waist. The sensation should remain flexible and distributed, without abrupt contraction.
  5. Repeat the exercise with the clarinet on a comfortable note, at a mezzo piano dynamic.
  6. Sustain the note for eight seconds, seeking steady air pressure and a gradual tightening of the abdominal belt.
  7. Then perform a long tone over twelve beats: four beats from piano to mezzo forte, four steady beats, then four beats returning to piano.
  8. During the decrescendo, imagine that the deep abdominal belt continues to support the air. The decrease in volume should not lead to a sudden release of breath.

The exercise should be performed without stiffening the throat, locking the ribs, or tightening the embouchure more. The transversus is not held in a fixed contraction: its engagement evolves with the remaining air quantity and the desired dynamic.

Between each sound, completely relax the abdominal wall and allow the next inhalation to occur freely. Three or four attentive repetitions are more useful than a long series performed with tension.

Exercise 2: Observe Breathing Without the Instrument

Place one hand on your lower ribs and the other on your upper chest.

  1. Inhale calmly without trying to fill up completely.

Choose a short phrase from a known piece.

  1. Identify its climax.
  2. Decide where to breathe.
