Why isn't my clarinet reed making a sound?

You put your reed on, pick up your clarinet, blow… and nothing comes out. Or almost.

The sound is difficult to produce, muffled, airy, unstable, too harsh, or the clarinet starts squeaking.

If you immediately put on a completely dry reed and start playing, it may seem:

  • too hard;
  • unresponsive;

  • or produce an unpleasant sound.

Before playing, moisten the reed for a few moments.

  • place it in your mouth;
  • or moisten its tip with a little water.

It is usually not necessary to let it soak for a long time.

2. Is the reed properly positioned on the mouthpiece?

The reed must be placed:

  • well-centered from left to right;

A reed too low

A reed off to the side

The reed must also be centered.

If it is significantly off-center to the right or left, the two sides are no longer in the same position relative to the mouthpiece rails.

3. Did the reed move while putting on the ligature?

You position the reed correctly.

Then you slide the ligature onto the mouthpiece.

  • tilted;
